Alta Via 1 in the Dolomites: 5-day Itinerary
Capturing the essence of the Dolomites via a shortened hut-to-hut hike on the Alta Via 1.
The Dolomites are a hiker’s paradise, and one of the best ways to experience their majestic peaks and alpine meadows is through a hut-to-hut trek. If you’re short on time but still want to soak in the essence of the Dolomites, this 5-day itinerary on the Alta Via 1 offers a perfect solution. Starting at the stunning Lago di Braies and finishing in the charming town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, this hike allows you to experience a condensed version of the famous long-distance route.
Key Details to Consider Before You Go:
Best Months to Hike: July and August offer the most reliable weather, but mid-June to mid-September are also popular times when the rifugios (mountain huts) are open.
How to Reserve Rifugios: Booking in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak season. For tips on booking huts, check out my other post, “Planning a Hut-to-Hut Hike in the Dolomites”
Bus Transfers: Start your adventure with public transportation—two bus rides (bus 445 then bus 442) from Cortina to Lago di Braies, which cost around €5 per leg. (Paid in cash)

Packing Tips: Make sure to pack crampons and hiking poles, especially if hiking in June or September, as there can still be snow at higher altitudes.
Other Essentials: Layers for unpredictable mountain weather, sturdy hiking boots, a sleeping bag liner (required in huts), a waterproof jacket and enough snacks and water for the journey are all must-haves.
